Following intensified monitoring to curb trans-border fuel smuggling, Iran for the first time officially shipped gasoil consignments to Afghanistan through Dogharun border terminal connecting Iranian Khorasan Razavi province and Afghan province of Herat.
“In the first half of the current year (March 21-September 22), oil tanker companies and border cooperatives exported 94.451 million liters of gasoil to Afghanistan,” provincial director of the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company (NIOPDC) Mohammad-Mehdi Qoraei told Shana.
Some 15 forwarding companies endorsed by NIOPDC in cooperation with local residents are carrying out the operation, he said.
Significant difference in fuel prices across the border with Afghanistan has made the trafficking lucrative for illegal vendors.
“Official export of gasoil helps checking of trans-border smuggling and improving economy of border households,” Qoraei added.
