Iran said on Saturday that it has received a request from Turkey to raise its gas exports to enable the country to cope with unprecedented harsh winter conditions.
National Iranian Gas Company's Director for Gas Supply Manouchehr Taheri was quoted by IRNA as saying that Iran's current gas export to Turkey stands at 31 million cubic meters per day (mcm/d).
Taheri did not elaborate on whether and when Iran would respond to Turkey's request.
He underlined that Iran is currently importing about 28 mcm/d of gas from Turkmenistan, adding that the figure will increase to 30 mcm/d 'if Iran faces harsh wintry conditions'.
The region, he noted, is going to experience severe winter this year, adding that NIGC has already devised measures to maintain adequate supply to the nation.
He said NIGC gas storage in pipelined stands at about one billion cubic meters of gas while another 2.1 billion cubic meters are being stored in two underground reservoirs.
The official noted that Iran's gas consumption almost doubled to 320 million cubic meters a day last week due to cold weather.
According to the official, Iran's gas imports and exports stood almost at the same amount this year.
