Iran's joining to Shanghai Cooperation Organization as a permanent member could promote the organization said the Secretary General of SCO Dmitry Mezentsev.
Talking on the sideline of the 14th annual summit of heads of state held in JenJo, China, he welcomed Tehran's official membership saying that Iran could increase the multifaceted functions of organization, IRNA reported.
The organization will take the benefits of energy, resources, cultural and humanitarian cooperation as Iran joins SCO, Mezentsev added.
Tehran currently holds the observer status in the SCO. It has already filed applications for official membership in the organization.
SCO is a Eurasian political, economic and military organization which was founded in 2001 in Shanghai by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
On July 10, 2015, the SCO decided to admit India and Pakistan as full members, and they are expected to join by 2016.
